Description
A lathe-turned lidded bowl in the Zakopane style, attributed to the Cepelia (Centrala Przemysłu Ludowego i Artystycznego) cooperative of Poland, circa 1960s–1980s. The lid features hand-executed chip carving (snycerstwo) with a central rozeta podhalańska (Podhale rosette)—an ancient solar symbol traditional to the Goral highlanders of the Tatra Mountain region—surrounded by concentric bands of cross-hatched diamond and sawtooth triangle motifs. The finial knob, turned separately and affixed to the lid, is finished in a contrasting darker stain, a characteristic aesthetic choice in post-war Polish treen production. The bowl exterior displays decorative turned grooves, and the whole is finished in a high-gloss varnish typical of Cepelia export-market production. The wood is possibly linden (lipa), the traditional material preferred by Podhale carvers for its fine grain and flavor-neutral properties, making such vessels suitable for use as a cukiernica (sugar bowl) or puzderko (trinket box). Unmarked. The Zakopane style, formalized by Stanisław Witkiewicz in the late 19th century, drew upon Goral vernacular decorative traditions; from 1949 onward, the state-run Cepelia cooperative standardized and promoted these folk art forms for both domestic and international markets. Measures 4.5 inches in diameter by 3 inches in height. Condition is good, with minor surface wear and light scratches to the knob, faint adhesive residue on the underside, and general shelf wear consistent with age.
