Description
A pair of Arabia Finland faience egg cups in the 'Kananpoika' (The Chick) pattern, Model HN. The decoration, designed by Raija Uosikkinen, features a highly stylized geometric representation of a chick rendered as connected ovals with abstract motifs, transfer-printed under a clear glossy glaze on a white ground — one in orange, the other in blue. The model form, characterized by a slightly flared rim and rounded base, was designed by Kaarina Aho and introduced in the late 1950s/early 1960s. Each cup bears the green 'Pikkukruunu' (Small Crown) factory backstamp reading "ARABIA / MADE IN FINLAND," with date codes '8-64' and '12 64' indicating manufacture in August and December 1964, respectively. This backstamp was in use from 1964 to 1971. Arabia, founded in Helsinki in 1873, was among the foremost Finnish ceramics manufacturers; Uosikkinen served as one of the factory's most prolific decoration designers during its mid-century period of production, known for folk-inspired, modernist transfer-printed patterns. The 'Kananpoika' pattern was produced in several colorways including orange, blue, red, and green. Dimensions are approximately 5 cm in height and 4.8 cm in diameter. Minor wear and discoloration to the unglazed foot rings.
