Description
A modern Indian ceremonial wedding sword (talwar) of a type traditionally carried by the groom during the baraat procession in North Indian Sikh and Rajput marriage ceremonies. The curved saber-form blade, approximately 37 inches overall length, is fitted to a cast brass hilt featuring foliate relief decoration on the grip and a lion-head pommel at the terminus of the knuckle bow — a motif loosely derived from 19th-century European officer sword designs. The blade appears to be polished chrome-plated steel or low-grade stainless steel consistent with decorative production. The accompanying scabbard is covered in red velvet — the traditional color signifying prosperity in Indian wedding customs — with a gold-tone zari (woven metallic) braid running along its outer curve. Brass fittings include a throat piece, a mid-scabbard suspension band with a single carrying ring, and a chape at the tip. The scabbard core is typically lightweight wood beneath the velvet on examples of this type, though the interior is not visible for confirmation. No maker's marks, proof stamps, or other identifying inscriptions are observed, consistent with unbranded workshop production likely from Northern India, where Amritsar, Punjab, is a primary manufacturing center for such ceremonial swords. Condition: generally good with minor tarnish and surface patina on brass fittings; a chip is noted at the end of the scabbard. These wedding-market swords are generally produced as decorative, non-functional objects with unsharpened blades intended for ceremonial use and display, though this has not been independently verified for the present example.
