Description
A Goebel M.I. Hummel 1988 Annual Collector Plate, "Little Goat Herder" (Hum 284), the eighteenth edition in the firm's annual plate series produced by W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik in Rödental, West Germany. The series was launched in 1971 to mark the factory's centennial and ran through 1995, comprising twenty-five closed-edition plates whose molds were destroyed after each year of production. The bisque porcelain plate, approximately 7.5 inches in diameter, features a bas-relief depiction of a boy in lederhosen accompanied by two goats, based on the original artwork of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel (1909–1946). The hand-painted design employs characteristic earth tones of brown, tan, green, red, blue, and grey, with a raised red "1988" date on the obverse and thirty-three embossed stars encircling the rim. The reverse bears printed multilingual edition text, the incised M.J. Hummel signature, the Goebel TMK-6 ("Missing Bee") trademark used from 1979 to 1991, and a "W. Germany" country-of-origin mark confirming pre-reunification manufacture. A copyright date of 1984 on the reverse references the year the bas-relief mold was copyrighted. The pierced foot rim accommodates wall display. Plate in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing; original box present with shelf wear, scuffing, and minor adhesive residue.
