Description
A Goebel M.J. Hummel 1986 Annual Plate, sixteenth edition in the series, model Hum 279, depicting the "Playmates" motif of a young boy seated with three rabbits. Hand-painted bas-relief porcelain with a matte-to-satin glaze in earth tones of green, brown, and grey on a cream ground, with red accents highlighting the date and the boy's scarf. The plate measures approximately 7.5 inches (19 cm) in diameter with a scalloped rim and two pre-drilled holes in the foot rim for wall hanging. Produced by W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik in Rödental, West Germany, the plate bears the TMK-6 "Missing Bee" trademark (in use 1979–1991), an incised M.J. Hummel signature on the front, and trilingual edition text on the reverse. The "Playmates" motif derives from Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel's (1909–1946) original artwork, first realized as figurine Hum 58 in 1936; the master sculptor for the annual plate series was Gerhard Skrobek (1922–2007). The Hummel Annual Plate series was inaugurated in 1971 to mark the Goebel factory's centennial and continued through 1995. A copyright date of 1973 incised on the reverse references the mold's original registration. Plate in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing; accompanied by the original box with minor shelf wear at corners.
