Description
A W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik M.J. Hummel 13th Annual Plate, model Hum 276, titled "Postman" (Der Postbote), issued in 1983. The hand-painted porcelain plate features a bas-relief depiction of a young boy in a postman's uniform carrying a mailbag and letters, based on the original drawings of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel (Berta Hummel), with the relief mold adapted by master sculptor Gerhard Skrobek. The cream ground is framed by a gradient rim with raised star motifs; the date "1983" appears embossed in red on the front. The reverse bears a blue underglaze backstamp reading "W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik / Rödental, West Germany," along with the incised model number Hum 276, a 1973 copyright date for the mold design, "Hand Painted," "13th Annual Plate," "© Goebel," and the advisory "Not to Be Used for Food." The trademark corresponds to TMK-6 (the "Missing Bee" mark), in use from 1979 to 1991. The plate is pierced at the foot rim for wall hanging. The Annual Plate series was inaugurated in 1971 to mark the centenary of the Goebel factory and continued through 1995; the "Postman" motif derives from a classic Hummel figurine (Hum 119) first modeled in the late 1930s. Cataloged at 7½ inches, consistent with the standard diameter for this series. Significant crazing is present throughout the glaze on both front and back surfaces.
