Description
A W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik M.I. Hummel bas-relief annual collector plate, model Hum 286, titled "Shepherd's Boy," issued in 1990 as the twentieth edition in the series that ran from 1971 to 1995. Based on the original artwork of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel (1909–1946) and modeled by master sculptor Gerhard Skrobek, the plate depicts a young boy in a green jacket and hat cradling a lamb, rendered in molded three-dimensional relief and handpainted in muted earth tones of green, rust, brown, and cream over a matte bisque-finished porcelain body. The rim features 33 molded star motifs, a standard design element carried throughout the series. Approximately 7.5 inches (19 cm) in diameter, the plate bears the incised "M.J. Hummel" signature on the front and the TMK-6 (Missing Bee) Goebel trademark on the reverse, along with multilingual edition markings in German, English, and French, the production location "Rödental, West Germany," a 1984 copyright date referencing the year the mold was first modeled, and the advisory "NOT TO BE USED FOR FOOD." The pierced foot rim accommodates wall hanging. Produced during the final year of the "West Germany" designation prior to German reunification, this plate is accompanied by its original presentation box. Plate in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or crazing; box exhibits minor shelf wear.
