Description
A lot of two American cast-metal hand-crank kitchen grinders with accessories: one Universal No. 2 Food Chopper by Landers, Frary & Clark and one Excel No. 101 Meat Grinder. The Universal No. 2, in confirmed tinned cast iron, bears raised cast markings reading "UNIVERSAL," "2," and "L.F.&C. NEW BRITAIN. CONN. U.S.A." on its body. Landers, Frary & Clark operated in New Britain, Connecticut from 1862 to 1965 and marketed the Universal line as versatile "Food Choppers" designed to process meat, vegetables, nuts, and fruits. The No. 2 model, introduced in 1904, utilizes a patented mechanism (Oct. 12, 1897; Apr. 18, 1899) in which a rotating star-shaped blade works against a stationary perforated plate. It remained in the L.F.&C. catalog for over sixty years. The Excel No. 101, marked "EXCEL," "101," and "MADE IN U.S.A.," is a standard household-sized meat grinder of similar clamp-on design; its body appears to be tinned cast iron consistent with mid-century American kitchen hardware production. Both grinders feature integrated screw-clamp table mounts and turned wooden handle grips. The lot includes four loose circular cutting plates of varying hole sizes and one four-point star cutting blade, along with a loose wing nut and bolt. Approximate length of each grinder is 10 inches. Condition is consistent with age: surface rust and oxidation are present on the loose cutting plates; pitting and tin-plating loss are visible on both grinder bodies; wooden handles exhibit wear to the original varnish; and general grime is present in crevices. The second grinder (Excel No. 101) is noted as missing pieces. Circa 1910–1950.
