Description
A Fostoria Glass Company "American" pattern (Line 2056) oval soap dish in clear pressed glass with fire-polished finish. The Fostoria Glass Company, founded in 1887 in Fostoria, Ohio, relocated to Moundsville, West Virginia, in 1891 and operated as a noted producer of high-quality pressed and blown glassware until 1986. The "American" pattern, designed by Phillip Ebeling and introduced in 1915, is one of the longest-running and most commercially successful patterns in the American glass industry. This oval soap dish features a smooth bowl — a deliberate departure from the line's signature all-over cubist motif, intended to prevent soap buildup in deep crevices — with four raised hexagonal prisms on the interior floor serving as drainage rests, corresponding to four hexagonal indentations on the underside. Two fan-shaped ribbed handles flank the scalloped rim. The form was also marketed as a trinket tray or ring holder in later Fostoria catalogs, and was frequently distributed by Avon Products, Inc. as a boxed gift set during the 1970s and 1980s. Unmarked, as is typical for this form. Measures 12 inches long by 7½ inches wide by 2 inches high. Condition is good with minor shelf wear to the underside base rim; no chips or cracks observed.
