Description
A mid-20th-century Japanese color woodblock print titled Still Night by Kiyoshi Nagai, created circa 1955. The composition depicts a stylized owl perched on bare branches against a deep blue ground, rendered with simplified forms and rich, earthy tones characteristic of postwar Japanese printmaking. The work is signed and titled in pencil in the lower margin. Kiyoshi Nagai (1911–1984), also known as Hiroyuki Tajima, was born in Tokyo and graduated from Nihon University in 1932. He studied Western painting techniques at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and began producing woodblock prints in 1946. Nagai used the name “Tajima” for his more abstract works and “Nagai” for representational subjects. He was a member of the Bijutsu Bunka Kyokai and later the Japanese Print Association, and he participated in the International Tokyo Print Biennale. His works are held in numerous international collections. Framed. Overall dimensions: approximately 22 × 17 inches. Condition is good, with light wear consistent with age.
