Description
A vintage Japanese netsuke carving depicting a monkey resting on a large namazu (earthquake fish). Netsuke are miniature, intricately carved sculptures that served as toggles for suspending items from a sash in traditional Japanese attire. The monkey is a messenger of the Shinto deity Ōkuninushi-no-Mikoto. The namazu, or giant catfish, is a mythological creature believed to cause earthquakes. Monkey and namazu carvings were a popular subject for netsuke carvers. The item is likely a vintage or antique piece, possibly dating to the early 20th century or earlier. 2" W x 2" L x 1.25" H Good condition.
