Description
This lot comprises a 19th-century French lithograph titled “Grande Salle des Antiques, Musée du Louvre”, drawn and lithographed by Philippe Benoist and printed and published by Henry Charpentier. The composition depicts the Grand Gallery of Antiquities at the Musée du Louvre, showing visitors among classical sculptures beneath monumental arches, rendered with strong architectural perspective and fine tonal detail characteristic of Benoist’s work. The image bears the printed credit “Ph. Benoist del. et lith.” and the title “Grande Salle des Antiques – Musée du Louvre” in the lower margin. Benoist, a leading 19th-century architectural and topographical lithographer trained under Daguerre, is well regarded for his accurate and atmospheric documentation of European monuments and interiors. Works of this type were issued for collectors and travelers and today serve as important visual records of historic museum and urban spaces. The lithograph is presented in a later molded wood frame with beaded inner molding and linen liner, stamped Aaron Brothers on the reverse. Sight size approximately 19½ in. x 22 in. Good condition.
