Description
This lot comprises a modern print, after a 19th-century yakusha-e (kabuki actor print) by Utagawa Kunisada (Japan, 1786–1865), also known as Toyokuni III. The image derives from Kunisada’s original oban-format actor portraits executed circa 1853 and depicts a richly costumed kabuki actor rendered in the vivid, decorative style for which the artist is renowned. Kunisada was the most prolific and commercially successful ukiyo-e designer of his time, producing more than 20,000 prints and dominating the genre of actor prints throughout the mid-19th century Edo period. This example is a later, modern reproduction rather than an original Edo-period woodblock print. Presented in a gilt molded frame with mat. Overall dimensions approximately 20 x 15 inches. Condition is good, with light handling wear consistent with age and framing.
