Description

An antique Chinese silk iron, also sometimes referred to as a "pan iron" or "coal carrier". These items were historically used for ironing delicate fabrics like silk. Hot coals were placed inside the basin-shaped pan to heat the flat bottom, which was then used to press silk and other fine textiles. The main body appears to be made of bronze, featuring ornate relief decorations, typically depicting dragons or other mythical motifs, on the exterior of the pan. The handle is designed with a protective element, often made from a heat-resistant material as is the case here with the green terminal, jade. This prevented the user's hand from getting burned.
These are considered collectible items from various periods of Chinese history, with many examples dating back to the 19th or early 20th centuries. 8" x 2" Good condition.
