Description
A piece of Mexican folk art known as an alebrije. These are vibrant, fantastical sculptures that originated in Mexico City with artist Pedro Linares López. The sculpture features three zebras with small birds perched on their heads, all on a common base. It is hand-made and painted. The figures have a glossy finish and are painted with a focus on black and white stripes, which is a popular design for these types of carvings. The term "alebrije" and the concept of fantastic, brightly colored hybrid animals came from Pedro Linares's fever dreams in the 1930s. Alebrijes are considered spirit guides or protectors in some interpretations, representing imagination, good luck, and the vibrancy of Mexican culture. They are a significant part of the local economy and a celebrated cultural export. 7 1/2" H x 7" L Good condition.
