Description
A Mexican wood folk art bird sculpture. This style of brightly colored, whimsical animal carving is widely known as an alebrije. The alebrije art form originated in Mexico City in the 1930s, created by Pedro Linares, who made them from paper-mâché after vivid hallucinations. The craft was later adapted by artisans in Oaxaca, who began carving them from the local copal wood. The wood for these is sustainably sourced from the branches of the copal tree. Carving the wood is traditionally a male task, while women typically handle the meticulous and intricate painting. 12" H x 19" L Good condition.
