Description
A Japanese-style seated Buddha figurine (known as zazou in Japanese), typically identified as Amida Nyorai or the Buddha of Infinite Light. It is modeled after the monumental Great Buddha of Kamakura, Japan. The figure is seated in a cross-legged position of meditation, known as the full-lotus posture (kekka fuza). The hands rest in the lap with thumbs touching, forming a specific hand gesture (mudra) called the Mida-no Jōin or Dhyana Mudra, which symbolizes a state of deep meditation and balance. The Buddha wears simple, unornamented monk's robes, a characteristic of a Buddha (Nyorai) who has achieved enlightenment, as opposed to a Bodhisattva (Bosatsu) who might wear jewelry. There is a raised portion on the top of the head, known as an ushnisha, which signifies extraordinary wisdom and extensive knowledge. The long earlobes are a traditional physical characteristic, a reminder of the heavy earrings the Buddha wore during his life as a prince. 6" H Good condition.
