Description
A Thai black lacquer round trinket box with a gold bird motif. These decorative boxes are hand-carved, typically from mango wood, and finished using a traditional Thai gilding technique called lai rot nam, which means "designs washed with water". The box is handmade in Thailand, likely in the northern region around Chiang Mai, which is a center for this art form. The traditional process involves applying numerous layers of natural lacquer, which is the resinous sap from the Ton Rak or Burmese lacquer tree. Designs are intricately engraved or drawn with a water-soluble paint, and then 24k gold leaf is applied to the surface. The yellow paint is later washed away with water, revealing the gold inlay in the unpainted areas. 12" Dia x 1 1/2" H Good condition.
