Description
A Korean celadon incense burner (or censer) by Lee Eun-gyu, with an openwork lid, resting on a separate carved wooden stand. These pieces are part of a long tradition of Korean celadon pottery, famously associated with the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) and modern production in areas like Icheon, South Korea. The burner is made of ceramic with a distinctive jade-green celadon glaze, known for its subtle, crackled finish. The color is achieved by firing iron-rich clay and glaze in an oxygen-reducing kiln. The ceramic piece features inlaid designs of flowers, likely chrysanthemums or lotuses, created using the sangam inlay technique where white and black slip is incised into the clay. The lid's openwork design allows the smoke from the incense to escape. It is designed to hold and burn incense sticks or cones and can be used for ceremonial purposes or as home decor. Signed by artist on bottom edge of vase. Base and vase stand: 5 1/2" Good condition.
